Oh, boy did they deliver. And by they, I mean Shannon Purser, Kristine Froseth and Noah Centineo. The story? Not so much.

In the last month, Netflix released two rom-coms, both starring Noah Centineo as the male lead. The first one, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, was released by Netflix in Aug. It is based on Jenny Han’s 2014 novel of the same name.

The movie, and Noah Centineo as the lead took the world by storm, generating a huge fan base almost immediately. Noah Centineo, a 22-year-old actor previously known for his role as Jesus on The Fosters, became everyone’s celebrity crush overnight.

So in Sept., when Sierra Burgess is a Loser was being released by Netflix, hundreds of brand new fans of the male lead were holding their breath to see if the movie can deliver what they’ve all been waiting for: another two hours of laughing and swooning.

Oh, boy did they deliver. And by they, I mean Shannon Purser, Kristine Froseth and Noah Centineo. The story? Not so much.

Shannon Purser, from Stranger Things, plays Sierra, a nerdy but confident girl in high school who is being harassed by the popular cheerleader, Veronica (Kristine Froseth). Jamey (Noah Centineo), a boy from another school starts texting Sierra, but he thinks that he is talking to Veronica.

The main part of the movie focuses on Sierra and Veronica’s budding friendship as they try to win over their crushes together, and still, the ending of the movie puts the focus of the movie back on Sierra and Jamey’s relationship rather than the friendship that dominated the whole movie before that.

After the way Sierra treated Veronica, and she’s the only one who got her happy ending, I would have expected a bigger apology from her and I’m definitely not alone in that. The ratings of the movie are relatively low and it has many negative comments and reviews already. Many people think that the movie is sending the wrong message to tweens and teens about consent and catfishing.

All in all, the storyline had potential, the actors were fantastic, but the movie, in general, did not deliver what we’ve all been waiting for. I give this movie a 3 out of 5 stars.
