Free coffee, lively entertainment, and a faculty member engaged in conversation with a room full of students who munch on pastries and desserts. For students who have attended an Agape Latte event,
this scene is a familiar sight. For students who have not, Agape Latte student coordinator, Sarah Roegner, explains the meaning behind those strange Greek words that Marymount students have been seen sporting on blue t-shirts around campus.
“Agape Latte is a caffeinated conversation about faith and life,” Roegner said. “It is a way for students to get to know the guest speaker on a more personal level. It also fosters a sense of community with live music and treats.”
The Agape Latte program at Marymount started last year in April. Each month, students have gathered at Bernie’s for an evening discussion with a selected faculty member who discusses his or her journey throughout life and how it has impacted his or her service at Marymount.
Previous speakers have included Todd Rimkus, President Shank, and recently, Marymount’s Provost, William Ehmann. After the discussion, students are encouraged to ask questions to further engage with the speaker. Along with the discussion, Marymount students have the opportunity to enjoy some of Marymount’s greatest musical talents. Throughout the program, student hosts entertain the audience by providing games where students get a chance to win free t-shirts and prizes.
Of course, hosting the event takes a lot of preparation and planning in the weeks prior to the event. Roegner describes the process.
“Planning usually starts well before the event itself,” she said. “Before there can even be an event we have to book a space at Bernie’s. We have to pick both a speaker and musical act that then agrees to the specific event…it’s a big undertaking but very rewarding to see the final product of all the work.”
If you have not yet attended one of Marymount’s Agape Latte events, don’t worry, there is still time! The next event will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. After that, an event will be held every month with the exception of November.
Come out and enjoy a relaxing evening with Marymount’s faculty over coffee, pastries, and entertainment.
