Senior Fashion Design student Shatha Abulohom hopes to do more than take a well deserved vacation after she walks across the graduation stage. She, and her jewel and neutral toned creations will be headed overseas to make a difference.
When asked of her number one short-term goal, she immediately replied, “to go away and volunteer in an orphanage, or something [similar] overseas. I think it would be cool if I could do design work [there], but I definitely know that I want to go away and spend time volunteering.”
With her longing to help others, the reflection of a caring heart can be easily seen in the delicate and purposeful way she illustrates and creates her work. Abulohom recalls her favorite garment she has made so far as her “very first piece ever from Apparel 1, just because it’s the first one, and it’s special. It was a white, sheer dress with pink flowers on it. Definitely not my style, but it was the first.”
Abulohom’s creative style follows no rules or regulations. She feels that tapping into her mood is the best inspiration in creating a unique design aesthetic, although she does tend to curate pieces that are sometimes outside of her personal comfort zone.
When queried about how her own every-day style correlates with her designs she laughed.
“It doesn’t– at all. I always design stuff that I wouldn’t wear. It’s so weird, but I always try to think of things that other people would wear, instead of what I would wear.”
According to this theory, a spin on symmetry is in the cards for Abulohom’s ideal customer. Looking forward to the spring production of Portfolio in Motion, she reveals, “It’s definitely going to be asymmetrical. It’s womenswear separates, but more dressy, like [she’s] going out to dinner.”
No matter the garment, Abulohom shows how the combination of innovation and thoughtfulness come together to create magic, all while making it look as easy as pie.
